After posting about my favorite WordPress plugins, I finally introduced you to my favorite WordPress themes and templates. As you will soon find out, rely on premium themes, i.e., fee-based templates. These cost a few dollars, but they bring much additional functionality that I wouldn’t want to do without.
Often you have special requirements or functionalities in mind; then, you usually don’t even need to start with free themes. Because many free themes are only slimmed-down versions of the respective premium variant or only basic features are supported without special templates and content elements.
All themes are now – at least technically speaking, “ Gutenberg ready” – but some have made special efforts to integrate on a deeper level with the new editor or one of the many other visual editors for WordPress. If this is the case, you can find this information in the description of the respective theme.
12 Best WordPress Themes
1. Divi Theme – More than just a WordPress theme!
The Divi theme is a very cool, chic, modern, and flexible WordPress theme with which you can create almost any page. It has its page builder built-in and is compatible with the brand new version Divi 4 even equipped with a theme builder! For the first time, you have full control over your entire website using the successful Theme Builder.
The Theme Builder uses the power of the Divi Builder and extends it to all areas of the Divi theme so that you can now also create custom headers and footers, category pages, product templates, blog posts, 404 pages, and so on.
Elegant Themes‘ pricing model, the Divi theme’s creators, I think it’s very fair. If you pay USD 249 once, you can use all themes and plugins, including widgets for life and an unlimited number of websites and even customer projects.
Alternatively, you can pay $ 89 a year for updates and support. A proposal! The support is really good, and Divi offers ready-made templates for virtually every page and every type of content that allows you to get started immediately and go live. I find Divi is particularly suitable for users who do not want to program themselves but still want to influence their WordPress site’s design fully.
The price also includes the two excellent Bloom plugins and monarch. Bloom is an email opt-in plugin, so it is intended to integrate very high-conversion newsletter forms into the website. Monarch is a very extensive and powerful social media sharing plugin.
Together with Divi and the Divi Template Builder, a great package to create chic, fast, and successful websites! An all-round happy solution in terms of WordPress.

3. Flatsome – Super responsive WooCommerce theme
It is the best-selling WooCommerce & Business Theme and is slowly scratching the 100,000 sales mark!
Flatsome is very stylish and has a lot of features. When designing the theme, great importance was attached to the user experience, making it very fast, easy to use, and looks very modern and contemporary. Flatsome is therefore perfectly suited for shops. I will soon set up a project with it for testing because I like the look very much, and the theme is continuously being developed.
The new Angular-based UX Builder is good and the ideal tool for building great, responsive websites with no programming experience. AND: Incidentally, all future updates are included 🙂
4. Bridge – Creative Multipurpose WordPress Theme
The bridge theme is advertised as the best-selling creative theme on Themeforest. With more than 376 different demo websites, the Bridge Theme is also very suitable for quickly and easily creating custom websites based on existing examples.
Great update: The developers of Bridge have now removed the only catch! In addition to the bad WP Bakery PageBuilder, the theme now also uses Elementor!
Now you can finally add and reposition all elements in the frontend via drag & drop. The operation of Elementor is much better, and I can now fully recommend the chic theme!
5. BeTheme – Responsive Multi-Purpose WordPress Theme
The well-known and popular BeTheme has already appeared in version 21! The theme now comes with more than 450 finished websites as templates to get started right away. At the user’s request, the team can even create new demos so that a finished website can be imported and adapted for almost any application.
The options panel is designed to be very intuitive and offers every conceivable setting option. With the integrated drag & drop builder (Muffin Builder 3), individual layouts can easily be implemented.
Of course, the theme is responsive, SEO-suitable, and also compatible with Gutenberg. All in all, for 59 USD a one-time real bargain!
6. GeneratePress – Super slim theme with very clean code
GeneratePress is a very fast and extremely light (<1 MB size, packed), mobile adapted responsive WordPress theme. It is completely designed and optimized for speed, SEO, and usability. It is also ideal for beginners and can be tried out for free thanks to the freemium model!
In the premium version then contains further functions and customization options. The nice thing is that GeneratePress works with any page builder. All schema.org microdata is already integrated for SEO and is available in over 20 languages. Particularly great: GeneratePress has already been integrated on a deeper level with the new Gutenberg editor.
So don’t be afraid of the Gutenberg update! You can even get the free GenerateBlocks plugin install and implement very cool and complex layouts directly in Gutenberg without PageBuilder!
By the way: In the GeneratePress Site Library, countless templates can be imported with one click, and the visual adjustment is made completely natively via the built-in WordPress Customizer, as you can see in the following video:
7. Astra – super stylish and fast theme
The Astra theme has seen insanely impressive growth in the past few weeks. In the meantime, over 1,000,000 users have installed the theme! It is now in the league of the three most used themes in the world, in which only the WordPress default themes Twenty Twenty and Twenty Seventeen shunting.
Even twenty nineteen doesn’t have that many installations! I also have a website for students to test built with it and am very pleasantly surprised. Astra is very fast, the pages are not cluttered, and everything looks super stylish!
There are tons of ready-made websites that you can simply import after installation and then make changes to adapt to your own needs. No matter if you are Elementor, the Beaver Builder, Brizy or want to work with the Gutenberg Editor in the website gallery, you are guaranteed to find it.
By the way: Astra is one of the few themes that manages completely without jQuery, which the pages do quickly. Loading times of half a second are possible with FAST HOSTING!
You can try Astra for free; the pro version starts at 59 USD a year, or 249 once! With it, you can build as many websites as you like and choose from 20 free templates. In my opinion, service providers and agencies recommend spending at least USD 169 a year or 499 one-time, because you get over 50 pre-built websites to customize with Elementor and the Beaver Builder.
There is even the WP Portfolio plugin in the big agency bundle for 249 USD per year or 699 one-time, which has favorited Ultimate Addons for Beaver Builder, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, the Convert Pro plugin, and the Schema Pro plugin contain. Of course, there is excellent support and even 1: 1 training with an Astra employee for familiarization.
8. Monstroid2 – Great theme for the Elementor PageBuilder
At TemplateMonsterI recently got the Monstroid 2 theme caught on. Especially if you are the Elementor Want to use PageBuilder, is Monstroid 2exactly the right theme for you. The theme is really good, very stylish, modern, technically, very well structured, and contains countless elements and widgets for creating and adapting pages. Also, there is a huge library with ready-made elements and entire demo websites that you can use according to your needs and taste and adapt to your application.
Monstroid 2 was originally published under the GPL license, but since the big update, it is under the standard license at TemplateMonster available. That means you pay 69 EUR one-time for one website or 131 EUR for three websites.
Alternatively, you can sign up for ONE from TemplateMonsterdecide on a subscription service for web designers and web developers. There you only pay USD 14.90 per month or USD 529 one-time for lifelong access. This gives you access to more than 11,700 premium content. ONE is and contains WordPress themes, Elementor templates, and WooCommerce themes and lots of WordPress plugins, e-commerce themes for Magento, OpenCart, PrestaShop, and many more. It also contains a lot of graphics, PSD templates, video files, logo templates, etc.
9. Uncode – Creative Multiuse WordPress Theme
The Uncode theme is one of the best-selling creative themes at Themeforest. The integrated wireframe plug-in comes with over 410 ready-made layouts that can be quickly and easily filled with your content and quickly lead to a very stylish website.
Also, the theme developed with a focus on PageSpeed and usability and so you can build fast and stylish pages with it despite Visual Composer. The theme costs 59 USD one-time per website. So overall, a good deal.
10. Impreza – Multi-Purpose WordPress Theme
A theme that was recommended to me several times with the words: “We use it to build all customer websites” is the fantastic Impreza theme. Impreza has the highest ratings of all the top sellers on ThemeForest, which also speaks for itself.
The demos give a good impression of how flexible and adaptable the theme is. Of course, Impreza is responsive, as well as WooCommerce and WPML compatible.
The Page Builder further develops WPBakery and comes with the Ultimate Addons extension, as is the Slider Revolution – the most popular slider plug-in.
11. The7 – The flexible, responsive WordPress theme
The7 was recommended to me by some readers, and I have now used it several times to create customer websites. The theme has a very simple installation process and offers almost infinite possibilities for your layouts and adjustments. Of course, everything is responsive and including page builder. Very nicely done!
The The7 theme already comes with a number of premium plugins, such as the Visual Composer Page builder, i.e., WPbakery. But if we’re honest, that’s the only downside. This includes all Ultimate Addons, Slider Revolution, Layer Slider, Go Pricing Tables, and ConvertPlug. Of course, it is also compatible with WooCommerce, WPML, Yoast SEO, All in One WP Migration, W3 Total Cache, etc.
12. Avada – The Responsive Multi-Purpose Theme
Avada is not without reason, the best-selling WordPress theme of all time on Themeforest! The theme has already been sold an unbelievable 500,000 times. Nevertheless, the developer is not resting on his laurels but is constantly developing the theme. Version 6 of Avada has been available for a few weeks, and with that, the manufacturer ThemeFusion has achieved a great success.
The front-end is much more stylish, modern, and faster, and the back-end area has now become more intuitive. With the integrated Fusion Builder and almost infinite variants, it is probably the most flexible and extensive theme that money can buy. I think the structure, the code, the typography, and the options are very successful, and I enjoy working with Avada. For a quick start, there are 50 finished websites as a demo via the built-in importer.
Tip for designers: The Page Builder Framework
If you want to design your website with a WordPress page builder completely, you should use an optimized PageBuilder theme, depending on the page builder you want. These are specially designed for the design with a WYSIWYG editor, and themselves bring little code and styling.
The new Page Builder Framework Theme is very easy to customize. So you can use the theme to design all areas outside of the content, i.e., your menu, the colors, etc. easily using the integrated WordPress Customizer and design the remaining page elements with the Page Builder.
The Page Builder Framework ThemeThe simplest standard version can be downloaded free of charge but has to be expanded with the paid premium plugin for USD 58 annually or USD 248 once for meaningful use. The theme then works excellently with elementor, the beaver builder, Brizy, divi, Visual Composer, and the SiteOrigin PageBuilder.
So if you’ve fallen in love with one of the many page builders, I would indeed recommend the Page Builder Framework Theme recommend because you can use it to create as many websites as you want and control every aspect of your visual design yourself – quickly, easily and without any programming knowledge.
Free WordPress Themes
Free WordPress themes are a dime a dozen. Many of them can be found in the official theme directory on WordPress.org. However, there are very often only slimmed-down ‘light’ versions of paid themes where you only get a limited basic functionality for free. If you have the choice and want to give your site an individual and professional look, I think you should spend a little money on a very good premium theme.
Tip: Find the right WordPress theme – Here’s how
So I do this:
- Either you have the desire, time, and the possibility to create the pages according to your ideas with a very flexible theme, i.e., to build them with a visual page builder or to assemble from existing shortcodes, then you should use a very powerful theme, such as Divi
- Or you can search for the topic of your future website in the demos of the premium themes or directly on ThemeForest, for example, for ‘health blog’ if you want to create a blog-style page about health.
- Of course, I would still pay attention to the PageBuilder used, the ratings, and the number of sales, and look closely at the live demos!
In any case, do not be discouraged! Sometimes I have to buy two, three, sometimes five themes myself before I find the right one for my project!
Do you still have any questions?
What kind of WordPress theme should I use?
It all depends on what you want to build a website. It is best first to visit the demo pages for those you like visually and see whether you can build your website from the templates or sample websites provided. You should choose from the recommended themes, the one that most closely corresponds to your future website or comes close to it, and you like it best!
Which is the best WordPress theme?
For me, the Divi theme is from ElegantThemescurrently, the best WordPress theme. With this, it is very easy to create a professional and very chic website. Hundreds of ready-made websites can be used as templates, and all the design elements and functions you need to create a successful WordPress website are included.
What is a child theme in WordPress?
The so-called child theme is either supplied with your main theme or simply creates a child theme using a plugin. This allows you to make changes to the respective theme without having problems with future updates. With a child theme, only the changed files are stored, and these are then used by WordPress. Everything else is used from the parent theme. This means that you do not have to make any changes in the parent theme, which may then be overwritten during an update.
Is WordPress free?
Yes, the CMS WordPress is basically free. At that time, WordPress’s inventor decided to publish the software under the GNU Public License (also known as GPL).
However, many themes and plugins are not free. Also, you need suitable hosting to run a website, which is not available for free. Overall, however, one can say that you can build and operate a professional website based on WordPress at a relatively low cost.
Are all WordPress themes free?
No, on the contrary. Most really good themes cost a few euros or dollars. Many free themes are only scaled-down versions of the so-called premium themes that have to be paid for once or annually. Free themes often contain relatively few functions or are very limited in their design options. If you want to create a professional website, I clearly recommend using a paid premium theme. Because there you get support in case of problems.
Which WordPress theme suits me?
You have to find out for yourself! The best thing to do is to take a look at the demo websites and try out different themes so that you can see which one you get along best with and which one suits you best.
