Selling – or not selling, that is not a question. But with which shop system? It hits some sooner, others later … but at some point, the question arises: How can I best sell my products and services online?
The fact is: if you want to sell something online, you can’t avoid a proper shop system – and you are quickly spoiled for choice. If you take a closer look and want an all-round solution that leaves (almost) nothing to be desired, you have to invest a little time and possibly money in your new system.
The big three: WooCommerce, Magento, Shopify.
There are mainly three major providers in e-commerce: Woocommerce, Magento and Shopify … today we want to focus on Shopify.
What does a shop system do? Should it be turquoise instead of green? Different logos on different pages, actions, gimmicks and your own ideas? You can customize your online shop or blog. However, you like. There are dozen of ways you can sell your stuff the way you want it to be. Diverse shop functions should be able to satisfy your buyers. There are also many design templates, free tools and even photos for free use to spice up your shop graphically.
As far as the design is concerned, a lot is, of course, a matter of taste. Personally, I have to say that I already like all of the templates very much. Here you have to say that the layouts look better in my opinion than those of WooCommerce, for example. You can build anything with WooCommerce, but if you want to start something fancier “out of the box”, Shopify is sure to delight.
On the other hand, you can, of course, also say that WooCommerce can implement pretty much any design. Anyone who works with WordPress and is used to dealing with themes will appreciate working with hundreds of ready-made WooCommerce templates.
What is better? You can’t really say that. If you work with WordPress and want to flexibly integrate a shop into your system, you will probably be more interested in WordPress. If, on the other hand, you don’t want to know anything about the technical stuff and want to have a finished, beautiful shop in an uncomplicated way, you should see advantages with Shopify.
Important features for your sales success
Shopify basically offers unlimited hosting capacity. A number of articles, customer data records are possible. In addition, 100 international payment methods are supported. In times of growing mobile usage, an important shop function is that products can be sold on the go without any ifs or buts. In other words, the shopping cart for mobile devices is automatically included.
The additional blog function is useful in that you can create, post and sort articles. The same applies to catalogues etc. But the best thing for tinkerers: You have access to the HTML and CSS files in your shop. This allows you to adapt most of the components to your wishes – provided you can program a little.
Of course, the current GDPR is also taken into account, so that you can get started immediately in this regard – or if in doubt, simply test Shopify for 14 days first.
Overall, Shopify offers a great all-round carefree package. Compared to WooCommerce, however, it must be noted that WooCommerce is extremely flexible and can be embedded in existing websites. Integrating Shopify is a little more complicated here. I would say that Shopify is more of a stand-alone solution, while WooCommerce is meant to be integrated into web projects.

The pricing structure on Shopify is clear and simple. Depending on the scope and functions, the system will cost you between around EUR 30 and EUR 300 per month.
Comparing it to WooCommerce is difficult. At first sight, WooCommerce is an “open source” product, meaning it is free. In fact, I can set up and use a shop for free.
The comparison becomes more complicated if you need special features, for example, regular payments via membership. These functions often have to be booked for a fee.
For an honest comparison, you should check exactly which functions you need and then see what extension would cost you at WooComemrce. Only then can you get a fair picture of the pricing structures.
