8 Related Posts Plugins for WordPress

8 Related Posts Plugins for WordPress

With Related Posts plugins, you can automatically show your blog visitors similar posts. This not only increases the time spent on your site. In addition, you also strengthen the internal linking, an important point in OnPage SEO.

What does a Related Posts plugin do?

With this plugin, you can automatically display related articles for the current article. Most plugins match categories, keywords, titles or even the article text. The higher the match, the more similar the articles are.

Similar posts are then usually displayed below the article.

This is to motivate the reader to read more articles on the site. That means the length of stay and page views increase, and the bounce rate decreases.

This also has a further positive effect on OnPage SEO. If you link other articles in your post, you will strengthen the internal linking on your website.

So much for theory, but how does it look in practice? Does anyone even click on the related posts? Good question!

In general, of course, you can’t answer that. During my check, however, I noticed that the reading tips within the article are clicked more often than those at the end of the article.

Here is the result of the Google click performance:

In the case of related posts within the content, the click rate is definitely a bit higher at 5 – 6%.

This is, of course, due to the fact that many visitors do not even read an article completely. As a result, you will not see what will be faded in at the end.

On the other hand, it could also be that the automatically suggested contributions are simply not really appropriate.

A brief introduction to plugins for similar posts

Since there are now a lot of Similar Post plugins, I would like to give you a brief overview.

Contextual Related Posts

I am currently using the Contextual Related Posts plugin on my site. Compared to the other plugins, it is quite fast, and the design is also easy to customize.

  • The automatic display below the article
  • Manual insertion possible
  • Caching
  • Widgets
  • Shortcode
  • Matching: title / content
  • Except for categories, posts
  • Display of article images
  • Style adjustments possible

The similar posts are shown by comparing the titles. In addition, you can also include content.

You can also add posts manually. Unfortunately, with CRP, this is not that easy. You make the selection below the article in a meta box. Here you have to enter the Post-ID, which you have to look for beforehand.

Related you can or must choose suitable contributions yourself because nothing is automatically linked here—the advantage: Really suitable and handpicked additional articles. At the same time, of course, it is also a disadvantage. Because especially when you have a lot of blog articles, you have to search and think.

  • Manual input
  • Arrangement via drag & drop
  • Widget
  • List-display
  • Post, Pages & CPT

Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP)

I used YARPP myself a few years ago. But for performance reasons, I exchanged it. It’s not that heavy anymore, but it’s still not lightweight.

However, when it comes to display relevant content, YARPP is very good!

  • Display as a list or with a thumbnail
  • Customizable design templates
  • Extensive query options: title, tags, categories, content
  • Display in feeds

Inline Related Posts

The Inline Related Posts plugin is a bit out of the ordinary in this list. Similar contributions are not placed at the end of the article but within the content.

This means that the linked post is seen and clicked more easily than when it is at the end of the article.

  • Display in the article text
  • Issued several similar articles
  • Pay attention to paragraphs and headlines
  • Customizable design

The premium version of the plugin offers a few more features. So you can insert more than three posts in the content and also include article images.

Custom Related Posts

Also, Custom Related Post’s different from the majority of other plugins. Because it only offers a manual selection of articles.

Using a widget, you can manually insert your own article link anywhere.

  • Selection of post types (Post, Pages)
  • Reciprocal linking of articles
  • Output via a shortcode, widget, block
  • Fully integrated into Gutenberg
  • XML import
  • Display of thumbnails

Related Posts for WordPress

Of all the plugins, Related Posts for WordPress offers the fastest way to get started. With the help of the Setup Wizard, even WordPress beginners can quickly use the functions. Because this analyzes the page and then provides the right link.

You can also link posts by hand.

  • Setup wizard
  • Manual input
  • Shortcode
  • Widget

Related Posts Thumbnails Plugin for WordPress

Related-Post Thumbnails automatically inserts similar posts with thumbnails under the article.

Unfortunately, the selection cannot be overwritten manually.

  • Selection of post types (Post, Pages)
  • Gutenberg block available
  • Display of thumbnails
  • Comparison via category / tags

Effect on page speed

Of course, plugins always affect the loading time of a website. Related posts plugins can be problematic here. Why? The database tables are searched in the background so that similar posts can be displayed. And the more queries run, the worse.

In the meantime, some providers even block memory-intensive plugins such as yarpp. These must not be installed because they consume too many resources.

So you should always have a look at the timing. Therefore I tested every presented plugin in a normal post. I looked at the loading time in the backend with QueryMonitor and the page loading time with KeyCDN.

Without the plugin, the loading time was 1.4 seconds. The fastest plugin was CRP, which did not affect.

The slowest plugin was YARPP with 1.7 seconds. The differences are not really dramatic. But if you have a page with a lot of articles and a large database, the results will certainly be different.

Related posts plugins are very good at keeping the reader on the page longer. They are also very useful for strengthening internal links.

All the plugins presented offer the basic function for integrating similar content. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
