Internal linking is not just an important point in OnPage SEO. In addition, internal links also improve the user experience and increase the time spent on your website. I will now introduce you to some useful WP plugins for internal link building.
What is an internal link?
External links are an important ranking factor in search engine optimization. So backlinks from another website to your website.
But internal linking is also very important. These are the links that point from one page to another within your website. Or from one blog post to another.
What are the advantages of internal linking?
The best thing about internal links is that you have complete control over them. You alone decide where and how often they are placed. And you can use it to show visitors and Google which of your pages are important.
But not only the relevance of individual pages can be increased. In addition, you can transfer via the internal link. Because if article A has very good rankings, you can pass on the part of its link power to article B through an internal link.
The advantages at a glance:
Improved user experience
You can draw the visitor’s attention to further topics of interest to him.
Increase the length of stay
The more information the visitor finds about his search query, the longer he stays on your website. And of course, the bounce rate also drops.
You can give Link Juice to articles you want to push.
You can optimize your rankings in search engines through well-thought-out internal links.
Unfortunately, you cannot determine the sitelinks displayed in Google yourself. But: Pages that are frequently linked internally have a great chance of being displayed here. This does not only apply to pages that are in the navigation, but also to internally linked pages or posts.
Search engines also like good internal linking! Because these not only make it easier for you to crawl a website better. This also enables them to better understand and classify the contextual context.
Make it as easy as possible for users to go from general content to the more specific content they want on your site. Add navigation pages when it makes sense and effectively works these into your internal link structure.
Make sure all of the pages on your site are reachable through links, and that they don’t require an internal “search” functionality to be found—link to related pages, where appropriate, to allow users to discover similar content. This is what Google says about internal linking.
Internal linking with WordPress plugins
Of course, you can also add internal links to your site without a plugin. You simply set a link to similar or further articles while writing.
However, with this method, you will miss a lot of link options. Because the more articles your website has, the harder it gets. Or do you remember all of your old posts ?!
Fortunately, there are some WordPress plugins that help you link your content internally. In addition to my favourite plugin, I’ll introduce you to a few other alternatives.
After testing different plugins, I ended up with Link Whisper. And for me, it is exactly the tool that supports me best.
Link Whisper is a special WordPress plugin for internal linking. It makes automatic link suggestions as you write.
Unlike other tools, the link tips are not based on titles, categories, or tags. At Link Whisper, these are generated through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and are much more appropriate.
The suggestions are displayed in a meta box directly below the editor.
If you want to adopt a link, you simply click on it, and Link Whisper inserts it into the post. Finished.
You can also easily adjust the important anchor text (link text). Another great feature is the Internal Links Report.
Here you can see all of your pages and how many inbound and outbound links they have. You can easily link forgotten articles (orphaned posts) internally. Or strengthen selected articles with additional links.
You don’t even have to go to the individual pages; you can do this conveniently using the Report link.
If you want, you can also store keywords that should always be automatically linked to a specific URL.
Here are the most important features at a glance:
- Analysis of the website for internal links
- Contextual link suggestions in the WordPress editor (via AI)
- Automatic linking of certain keywords
- Transfer of the links with a click
- Adaptation of the anchor texts
- Internal Links Report enables linking without having to go through WP-Editor
- Broken Links Report
- Overview of internal and external links
- Exclude certain words, categories, post types, HTML tags
- Export in CSV format
Link Whisper starts at $ 77 for 1 website. There are also the following multiple licenses:
- $ 77 for 1 website
- $ 107 for 3 websites
- $ 157 for 10 websites
I also tested Interlinks Manager, but I wasn’t quite as happy with it as with Link Whisper.
The plugin also provides you with link suggestions, but not quite as conveniently and conveniently as Link Whisper. Because here the suggestions are based on categories & tags while Link Whisper uses AI.
But the tool offers some very useful features that hardly any other plugin contains. It calculates the link juice and tracks the clicks on internal links.
So you can see exactly how the users receive the internal linking.
The most important features:
- Analysis of the internal linking
- Calculation of the link juice
- Suggestions for internal links
- Automatic creation of internal links
- Tracking the links
- Data export in CSV format
You can get Interlinks Manager for a one-time price of $ 33.
Internal Link Juicer: SEO Auto Linker for WordPress
Internal Link Juicer is also a plugin for the automated creation of an internal link.
In the first step, you define a keyword and store the URL of a page for it. The tool then automatically inserts the link to this page for each occurrence of the keyword.
You do all of this manually for the respective post.
Here are the other features:
- Post types can be excluded
- Individual contributions/pages can be excluded
- The number of links to be set can be specified
- HTML tags such as headings can be skipped
- The design of the link can be customized
- The links are retained after deinstallation
Compared to Link Whisper or Interlinks Manager, the plugin doesn’t have that much to offer. Because you have to first think about which keywords you want to have linked, this means that you do not automatically receive suggestions for internal links. The plugin only links keywords you selected.
Internal Links Manager
The Internal Links Manager works similarly to the Link Juicer. Here, too, you link the URL of a page with a keyword. The plugin then inserts the links automatically.
But compared to the previous plugin, you can manage the links centrally. That means you don’t have to go to each page individually to enter a keyword-link combination.
Another special feature is certainly the link tracker. Similar to the Interlinks Manager, you can see how often which internal link is clicked. However, it didn’t work in my test.
- Exclude post types
- Exclude pages / posts
- Ignoring HTML tags
- Link overview
- Click tracking
- Import/export of links
More plugins that improve your internal linking
In addition to the special link building plugins, there are, of course, a whole range of other tools that also improve internal linking.
Some SEO plugins, such as Rank Math or Yoast SEO (Premium) also suggest suitable internal links in the post editor. That sounds great! But unfortunately, you have to mark Corner Stone posts first.
Rank Math Link Suggestions
Only this previously marked content will then be offered to you as a suggested link.
And unfortunately, you cannot automatically insert them into the appropriate place in the text with a click.
Thus, the internal linking is, of course, a bit more time-consuming and inconvenient. And many sides fall by the wayside because only the marked content is taken into account.
Related Post Plugins
Bloggers in particular often use a related posts plug- in to display related posts.
With tools like this, you can also improve the user experience, lower the bounce rate and strengthen internal linking.
I have already tried various such as YARPP or Inline Related Posts. I am currently using contextually related posts, which makes very good suggestions and is also quite fast.
But in direct comparison to the specialized plugins for internal linking, there are several disadvantages.
- Most related post plugins have suggestions based on categories and/or tags. In other words, the relevance of the content is usually not very good.
- The links are not embedded within the actual content. Thus the context is missing, and the links are less relevant.
- The similar posts are usually at the very bottom of the page. That devalues the internal link a little.
- In addition, many users will not even see the reading suggestions. Because very few visitors read a text to the end.
Unfortunately, internal linking is too often neglected. It is an SEO measure that is quite easy to implement. As you write, you can try to link important pages to one another.
